How to use your custom mix
-
Q Should I have more than one formula for long distance training and racing? A Most of our athletes, especially those who are racing the longer endurance events, tend to choose to use two different formulas—an endurance mix (aka "bike blend") and a sprint mix (aka "run blend"). This system is very successful for the majority of our athletes racing endurance events that are half Ironman distance and longer. For events other than triathlons, we tweak these two base formulas slighty based on your activity.
An endurance (bike) blend - This should be higher in calories with some protein. When using an all liquid nutrition approach, many athletes have the tendency to feel hungry. Because protein has a high satiety value, it helps to keep you feeling good and satisfied even during the longest sessions. We like to just put a few grams of protein in our endurance (bike) blends to help with hunger and to keep your blood sugar steady. Typically, we recommend to use it for long training and races of more than 3 or 4 hours. If formulated correctly, your custom-blended nutrition solution should be the only thing you need—the protein will keep you from getting hungry, and the electrolytes and carbohydrates will allow you to avoid salt pills and gels, thus cramping and bonking. An endurance blend is the "go to" mix that we recommend using for most of your long rides and for the bike leg of Ironman racing.
A sprint (run) blend - You will want to reduce the calories by 15–20%, as higher intensity training tends to make digestion more difficult for many athletes. By keeping the calories lower, we ensure that your stomach is clearing itself efficiently, minimizing any feelings of fullness or bloating during the higher intensities. You will also want to eliminate the protein. We do not recommend putting protein in your sprint blend because protein, by its nature, tends to foam when agitated. When you are out running (or on a super high intensity ride) and your stomach contents are sloshing around, it can cause foaming in the stomach, which can lead you to feel bloated and gassy. You can use this formula for any sprint bike racing, running, swimming, weight lifting, etc. A sprint blend is the "go to" mix that we recommend using for most of your short distance speed work and for the run leg of Ironman racing. For shorter distance triathlons, use this formula during both the bike and the run.

Q How do I mix my custom blend? A We recommend that you drink one serving per hour. No more and no less.
One serving = 2 level scoops of your powder mixed with 20-24 ounces of water.
Use the scoop that is provided in your bag and measure out two (2) level scoops of your dry powder. Your CUSTOM formula was hand-weighed to find the perfect scoop size for your unique blend. Dump the powder into your water bottle. Fill bottle with water. Shake until all of the formula is dissolved into a liquid. Take with you for your workout and consistently take sips from your bottle as you go. You will want to finish a whole bottle every hour.
One serving (2 scoops) per hour. That’s all you need. We can't say it enough: SIMPLICITY is the key to performance. Don't waste energy overthinking and complicating the process. You will begin to lose focus on the main goal: your performance.

Q Can I REALLY eliminate solid food, bars, gels and salt supplements? A YES! YES! YES!
INFINIT custom formulas are all-in-one nutrition solutions: They contain everything you need, and nothing you don’t. No need to fumble with solid foods, bars, gels, or even salt tabs. Everything an athlete needs is in one bottle of INFINIT. We design our formulas to be "isotonic," meaning they have a similar concentration to that of your bloodstream. This allows for quick and gentle absorption of your nutrition and fluid, while minimizing fluid shifts in the body (a main culprit of cramping, GI issues, etc.). It is by far the easiest way to get all your nutrition and hydration in one. Our formulas are a very light, easy to digest, all-natural alternative to sports drinks and supplements.
When dialing in a custom formula, we match calories to your specific body composition and type of training/racing you are doing. We factor in your sweat rate and frequency of cramping when dialing in your electrolyte levels. We typically recommend 300 - 400 mg sodium for the average athlete and upwards of 450 mg of sodium for the super drenched sweater with frequent cramping. Electrolyte and fluid balance within the body is one of the most important goals of proper performance nutrition and also plays a huge role on reducing muscle cramping. Make sure that you also take in 20-24 ounces of water every hour. Protein has a high satiety value and helps you from feeling hungry. We add a small amount (2-4 grams) of protein to help keep you feel satisfied all day long. We also tailor the flavor preference and intensity to your wants. Lastly, you can choose to add in the amount of caffeine (if any) that you feel best with.
Ironman Athletes, 24 hour MTB National Champions, Ultra-marathoners, Crit cyclists, Tour de France riders, IndyCar and NASCAR drivers, CrossFit, swimmers, the list could go on and on -- all win with all liquid nutrition.

Q How do I carry all of my nutrition during a race? A One of the most frequently asked questions we receive is, "What's the best way to carry my INFINIT for training and racing?" Honestly, this is 100% a personal preference situation. Some athletes like to concentrate their bottles, while others like to mix one serving in a bottle and carry multiple bottles and/or extra powder. It really depends on what you can mentally handle during training and racing. Here are the two methods broken down:
Normal: the easiest way to keep a handle on your intake is to mix 2 scoops of powder in a bottle and drink one bottle each hour. You will need to either carry multiple bottles or carry additional powder to remix bottles after each hour. Make sure that if your bottle is not 20-24 ounces that you take in additional plain water from a different bottle or water fountain.
Concentrate: You can concentrate your bottle(s) and put multiple hours of nutrition in a bottle. Just make sure that you are only drinking one serving per hour. Example: You mix 4 servings (8 scoops of powder) in one 24 oz bottle. Divide your bottle in fourths and make sure to only drink 1/4 of the bottle per hour. This will give you 6 oz of fluid so make sure to drink 14 - 18 oz of additional plain water either from another bottle on your bike/fuel belt, at aid stations, or water fountains. It is important to drink additional plain water to equal a total hourly fluid intake of 20-24 ounces to make sure the solution remains isotonic.
1 hour bottle = 2 scoops
2 hour bottle = 4 scoops, plus you need to drink additional plain water. Divide your water bottle in half.
Drink half of your bottle each hour (because it’s a 2 hour bottle).
3 hour bottle = 6 scoops, plus you need to drink additional plain water. Divide your water bottle in
thirds. Drink a third of your bottle each hour (because it’s a 3 hour bottle). Here is a video that can also help with concentration. Make sure that you practice whichever method you would like to use during racing, to make sure you are able to keep up with the correct consumption rate on the big day.

Q Why is liquid nutrition better than a system of food, gels and salt pills? A The bottom line is...calories are calories. Your body does not necessarily care if it’s in a liquid or solid form. Juggling gels, drinks, salt pills, bars, solid foods, etc. makes consistency with your nutrition virtually impossible to maintain. Simplicity is key.
In order for your body to process your nutrition quickly and with the least stress, it needs to be an isotonic solution. The issue with the multiple nutrition product method is that the solution will not be completely isotonic when you are consuming everything. Yes, your body will eventually break down the nutrition to make it isotonic, but that will take time and energy, neither of which you can spare. Check out the research on osmolality.
With an all-in-one liquid nutrition solution, you can ensure that the solution is already in an isotonic form as soon as you are ingesting it. You are getting the exact number of calories, electrolyte and protein that you require for proper performance. Too much or too little can lead to bloating, dehydration, and the dreaded bonk.

Q What is the biggest mistake that you see athletes make on race day? A That’s an easy one to answer. Athletes tend to think that “more is better.” While this may (or may not) be correct when it comes to training volumes, it's exactly the wrong thing to do when it comes to your performance nutrition. Your body is an amazing instrument and will perform better if you don’t smother it.
Across the board, the issues that we see stem from doing too much when it comes to nutrition. Too much nutrition leads to the majority of common problems: bloating, gastric distress, cramping, nausea, etc. We feel that a bonk is easier to fix than when you feel bloated like you just ate Thanksgiving dinner.

Q How much should I be drinking? A Over the years we have seen a trend. Athletes have no idea exactly how much they should be drinking in order to stay hydrated. Hydration is a HUGE component that determines how you will perform. If you lose 2-3% of your body weight in water loss, you will lose 5-15% of your watts (power output).
Salt does not prevent dehydration or cramping by itself. That is the stuff of urban legend and chat forums. Salt is a transporter of fluids. You need salt, but only enough to move water out of your gut and into your system. This movement of water is the key to prevent dehydration and cramping issues. If you are not drinking enough water, no matter how perfect your formulation is, you might be in for a long day. We recommend somewhere from 300 - 400 mg of sodium for the average athlete and upwards of 450 - 475 mg for a super drenched sweater with tons of cramping. We have created the perfect blend of electrolytes containing sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium.
To reiterate, salt is a transporter. You don’t want to overload on electrolytes. You only need enough to move the liquids you are putting into your system. The side effects of too many electrolytes are the same if you were not taking in enough of them. When you have too much sodium in your body/blood, your blood will become hypertonic (reminder: we want your blood to be isotonic for the best absorption). This means that your blood will need to pull more water in to become balanced. If you are not taking in enough fluid to keep your blood isotonic, your body will start pulling water from other areas of your body. Since our muscles hold a lot of water naturally, that is usually where your body will pull the water from. This causes your muscles to become dehydrated, and that is when you tend to seize and cramp.
DO A SWEAT RATE TEST! How are you going to know how much you need to be drinking if you don’t know how much you are sweating out? Remember, no product out there will prevent you from dehydration if you are not drinking enough. Your hydration target will vary somewhat depending on the heat and humidity, but this is a crucial component to race day performance. Here is what you should do:
• Before your workout, empty your bladder and record your weight
• Record how much you drink during the workout and the length of your workout
• After the workout, empty your bladder and re-weigh yourself
• Take the weight you lost, ADD the amount you drank, then DIVIDE by the number of hours you worked out. This will give you the amount of fluid you lost and an hourly hydration target. We recommend that you do it a few times to determine an average. Your hydration target will need to be adjusted somewhat for heat and humidity, but this is key information for performance. With our products we recommend 20-24 ounces of water each hour. Some athletes may need closer to 28-30 ounces, and that is okay. Make sure that this is total water intake per hour, and includes the 2 scoops of your powder.
It does not have to be complicated. Remember SIMPLE is better.

General INFINIT FAQ's
-
Q What is the real cost of INFINIT compared to other products? A We spend a great deal of our time talking with customers. We like to stay in touch with what is going on in the sports we support, and also getting feedback from our athletes. Occasionally we get the comment “INFINIT is kind of on the expensive side, but well worth it!” That got us thinking, how does INFINIT compare on a cost basis to other companies?
Let’s break it down in a simple way, a 100 mile ride that takes 6 hours:
Method #1: “The old-school pocket full of stuff”
– 6 bottles of a sports drink @ $1.99 = $11.94 - total of 900 calories, 800 mg sodium and 0g protein
– 4 gels @ $1.50 = $6.00 - total of 400 calories, 500 mg of sodium and 0g protein
– 1 bar @ $1.59 - total of 250 calories, 240 mg of sodium and 9g of proteinTOTALS:
– $19.53
– 1,550 calories
– 1,540 mg of sodium
– 9g of protein
While this method can certainly work, it is very difficult to keep your gut consistent (and happy) throughout a long day. Many times athletes will do too much and find their gut will shut down. Other times they may not do enough and have that dreaded bonk. Then, there is that "trying to get down a bar in 90-degree heat, after 4+ hours in the saddle.” There’s nothing quite like the enjoyment of chewing on the same dry bite for 20 minutes... we’ve all been there. In any case, not only will you have to keep track of all of the various components of method #1, but YOU MUST CARRY WATER to wash all of it down. Remember, if you drink a sports drink on top of a bar or gel, you are going to end up with a thick sludge in your gut. This will NOT be processed quickly. Your body then has to go into digestive mode to dilute the sludge in order to get it to pass, thus pulling water and energy from places it shouldn't. Water needs to be used to keep your body cool and muscles working properly, while the energy should be used to make your body move. This digestive process will cause you to become dehydrated and decrease performance.
Method #2: 6 bottles INFINIT Endurance custom blend @ $2.36 per bottle (per hour) = $14.16
Totals:
– $14.16 (27% LESS than gels, bars, sports drinks, salt pills, etc.)
– 1,680 calories (MORE calories)
– 2,250 mg of sodium (68% MORE sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium)
– 24g of protein (266% MORE protein)Isotonic solutions.
Drink your nutrition... do your thing.
Brainless.
69% of the cost. So, next time that you think INFINIT is more expensive, remember this:
– INFINIT provides an all-in-one delivery system that's custom-blended for what YOU want
– More calories in an isotonic form guarantees to give you zero GI problems
– Enough electrolytes to throw away that pocket full of salt pills
– Enough protein to keep you from getting hungry all day long
– All of this at a MUCH lower price than other productsFor more information specific to YOUR personal needs, chat with an INFINIT Nutrition specialist. Q Why 3 carbohydrate sources? Aren't simple sugars "bad"? A Why do we use multiple carbohydrate sources in our products? Why do we use a blend of simple and complex carbohydrates? How does INFINIT allow you to absorb 25-30% more calories than some other products out on the market?
SCIENCE. We use only evidence-based research to develop and refine our products, not marketing hyperbole.
Despite what people may try to tell you, simple sugars are not bad. The truth is that blending a combination of simple and complex carbohydrates is what allows you to absorb MORE calories while keeping the solution isotonic. Isotonic solutions are key to keeping your gut happy during long, strenuous training and racing. Isotonic custom solution simply means that the osmolality (concentration of a solution) of your blend will match the osmolality of your blood. This makes for a quick and easy move of nutrients from the stomach into your intestines. If you do not have an isotonic solution, your stomach has to work to break down the contents of what you take in until they are at an osmolality you are able to digest. This can take 40 minutes to three hours! [Thus, leading to an overload and back up of nutrient digestion.] Lack of nutrient digestion and absorption = low energy and GI distress.

Q Why do I have different scoop sizes? A You may see a slight difference in scoop size from time to time, even if you have not made a single change to your formula, and that's okay.
Each INFINIT custom blend is made with care, by hand. We guarantee that with the provided scoop size, you are getting the amount nutrients that is necessary to fuel your body each hour. Scoop sizes will change according to the density of the powder that you require per serving. From time to time, the particle size of an ingredient may change, and this may cause a formula to be heavier or lighter than normal. We recommend that you use the scoop that comes in the bag each time. We have made sure that it is the correct scoop size for your formula, by weight, for that batch. If you are concerned it is not correct, please reach out, and we can verify!
Q Where can I find the exact nutritional information for my custom formula? A Start by logging into your INFINIT account. Click the 'My Formulas' tab in the top left corner of the webpage. Next, click the 'Edit Formula' button for the formula whose nutritional information you would like the to find. Lastly, click the yellow 'Nutrition Info' button that is to the right of the sliders. This will bring up the standard FDA nutrition label with the values of calories, carbohydrates, protein, etc. specific to where your sliders are set.

Q Is it bad if I want to eat a bar, take a salt pill or a gel? A Of course you can take something if you really want to; it's your body and your race. Just remember that anytime you take something that is not isotonic, you MUST WASH IT DOWN WITH WATER, NOT YOUR CUSTOM MIX. You want what’s in your gut to be the correct osmolality. Adding extra "stuff" into the mix can cause bloating, dehydration, GI cramping, and other “issues.”
Your body can only digest and absorb so much. When you add in extra things, it will cause an overload, and your body has no way of processing it quickly enough to keep you feeling good. When you have an overload of nutrition, hour after hour, there is going to be a buildup in your gut, and this will lead to a heavy stomach and a slew of GI distresses. If you are REALLY craving something other than liquid, a few pretzels, half a banana, or crackers are typically light enough to be okay. Make sure that if you decide to take in something heavier, you only drink plain water for the next 30-45 mins to ensure you're not overloading your gut with more unneeded nutrition from your INFINIT.
As for sodium supplements, we recommend that if you start to experience additional cramping, you take in additional plain water versus adding sodium. When you have too much sodium in your body/blood, your blood will become hypertonic (we want your blood to be isotonic). This means that your blood needs something more in it, and when it is overloaded with sodium, it will need more fluid. If you are not taking in enough fluid to keep your blood isotonic, your body will start pulling water from other areas of your body. Since our muscles hold a lot of water, that is usually where your body will pull the water from. This causes your muscles to become dehydrated, and therefore, they will start to seize and cramp. It is important to keep the proper fluid-electrolyte balance.
If you are not 100% confident that your custom blend is providing you with EVERYTHING you need/want from your nutrition, you need to make a tweak or two to your formula.

Q Why does my mix foam? A If you are noticing foaming in your bottle or fuel system, it is typically because of the protein in your mix. Protein, by its nature, tends to foam when agitated. We want to keep foaming to a minimum to avoid feeling bloated and gassy.
Due to the movement of running, protein in your bottle usually leads to a bottle containing mainly foam. So, when using INFINIT for running, many of our customers have a running specific formula that contains no protein. When there is a lot of foam in your bottle, there is most likely a good amount in your stomach as well. Foaming in your stomach can lead to bloating and gas. Yes, right after you mix up your bottles of endurance mix you will most likely notice foaming, but after it gets a chance to sit for a little bit, the foaming should dissipate, and you will be good to go.

Q About INFINIT's blend of electrolytes... A INFINIT's exclusive blend of electrolytes is primarily sodium (all natural sea salt), potassium, calcium, and magnesium. Our electrolytes are of pharmaceutical grade and in the most readily absorbable forms. Developed by renowned sports dietitian, Kim Mueller MS, RD, CSSD, this blend of essential electrolytes is all you need for training and racing. There is no need to supplement with salt tablets or electrolyte supplements, even during your most intense workouts. Unlike most other products, when paired with the correct amount of water, INFINIT gives you enough electrolytes to meet your specific needs.
Electrolytes are an important part of transporting fluid out of your gut and into your system. Electrolyte and fluid balance within the body is one of the most important goals of proper performance nutrition, and also plays a huge role on reducing muscle cramping. For most athletes, 325 mg to 375 mg of sodium per hour is an excellent starting point. It is also essential that you consume enough water each hour to maintain the proper balance.
To check the content of each specific electrolyte within your custom blend, click the 'Nutrition Info' button for the full FDA nutrition label, next to the sliders.

Q About Carbohydrates... A The INFINIT blend of carbohydrates is a combination of sucrose (in the form of pure cane sugar), dextrose, and maltodextrin. Dextrose and sucrose are slightly faster burning molecules and are broken down more quickly by the body for optimal absorption. The 'Speed' end of the slider has a higher percentage of faster burning dextrose for quick energy. The 'Endurance' end of the slider uses primarily maltodextrin for its endurance qualities. Maltodextrin is slower burning, and therefore, is more conducive for long distance endurance events. Adjusting the slider will change the percentage of dextrose to maltodextrin.
Blending a combination of simple and complex carbohydrates is what allows you to absorb MORE calories while keeping the solution isotonic. Isotonic solutions are key to keeping your gut happy during long, strenuous training and racing. Isotonic custom solution simply means that the osmolality (concentration of a solution) of your blend will match the osmolality of your blood. This makes for quick and easy movement of nutrients from the stomach into your blood stream.

Q About Protein... A For endurance athletes, protein is useful as an appetite suppressant. INFINIT research has found it virtually impossible to train or race for long periods (from 3-24 hours) on a straight carbohydrate drink alone. After a couple of hours, athletes tend to get REALLY hungry. [With the proper INFINIT mix, it should be your all-in-one nutrition source, so when you find yourself feeling hungry, you will want to add in other things. This is where we find a lot of athletes overloading their gut with calories and protein, and therefore, potential GI distress.] Remember, food is far harder to manage and process than liquids. We know many 24 hour racers (and longer) that are successfully using their custom INFINIT mix with protein and little to no added solid food.
INFINIT's whey isolate protein contains all the essential amino acids and has a 25% higher BCAA (branch chain amino acids) composition as compared to other protein sources. Because of its quick absorption rate, whey isolate is also well tolerated by athletes. Whey isolate protein has trace amounts of lactose found in it, and is generally accepted well by those that are lactose sensitive/intolerant.
While we use protein predominantly as an appetite suppressant, a recent study conducted at James Madison University by Saunders and colleagues discovered the addition of whey protein (1.8% concentration) to carbohydrate post workout, reduced post-exercise creatine phosphokinase (CPK) levels, a common indicator of muscular damage, by 83% (p < .05) as compared to athletes only consuming carbohydrate. This indicates whey protein has a potential ergogenic effect for endurance athletes engaged in intense training.

Q About Caffeine... A ALWAYS consult with a medical professional about the use of caffeine before adding it to your custom mix.
The caffeine slider allows you to adjust the amount of caffeine from ZERO (far left) all the way to 200mg (far right) per 20 ounce serving. 200mg is the equivalent to 2-3 cups of strong coffee, so be careful not to overdue caffeine.
Caffeine is a stimulant of the central nervous system, which also helps to release free fatty acids from body fat stores into the blood to provide additional fuel for muscles over and above the sugar that is stored in your liver. There is substantive research which shows that caffeine spares the limited supply of muscle glycogen. It seems to be a performance enhancer, as many athletes, after ingesting caffeine, feel less fatigue while performing at higher levels of work for longer periods of time.
The known diuretic effect of caffeine is unlikely to cause significant dehydration in shorter duration races due to the obvious simultaneous hydration protocol. Caution should always be used when using caffeine in long distance endurance events like Ironman distance Triathlon, Ultra-running or Adventure racing.

Q How do I know where to set my flavor? A Flavor is a MAJOR component of the overall performance and usability of any sports nutrition product. Most products are made to taste good in a taste testing lab. We all know that a lab is not real world conditions.
INFINIT Nutrition is the first and only company to let you adjust the strength of your flavor to make it taste how YOU want. We know that the real test of any product is how it tastes long into a workout and after it gets warm. If the athlete does not want to drink the product because it tastes bad after it has gotten warm, they will not be able to consume the calories and electrolytes needed to perform.
Our flavor slider allows you the ability to customize taste to your unique personal preference. If you want a stronger flavor, simply move the flavor slider to the right (stronger). If you do not tolerate much flavor during your workout, slide it to the left (weaker). As a point of reference, most other sports drinks flavor intensities are 80-90% of the way to the stronger side of the slider. The INFINIT Flavor blends are made of cane sugar (a fast acting, easily absorbed carbohydrate source) and 100% all natural flavors. Zero artificial colors, flavors, or sweeteners are used. Some citric acid is used for our citrus flavor blends.
Helpful hint: Most athletes in our test protocols did not like as much flavor during a long and strenuous workout. Our research also shows that your perception of taste becomes more acute as your workout duration increases. In other words, the perception of the strength of flavor increases as your workout/race goes longer. Lower flavors in the beginning taste stronger towards the end. Our suggestion is to keep the flavor in the medium-low to medium range to start.
