Paddlesports have seen a drastic increase in popularity and participation over the past decade. The traditional sport, paddleboarding, originated in Hawaii and is done kneeling on a board and paddling with the hands, similar to a butterfly swimming stroke.  Stand-up Paddleboarding, or SUP, is a popular derivative of paddleboarding, where boarders maintain an upright stance on their boards and use a paddle to propel themselves through the water.  According to the Outdoor Foundation's 2013 Outdoor Participation Report, stand up paddle boarding was listed as the most popular outdoor activity among first-time participants.

Lockwood Holmes is a professional prone paddleboarder that competes out of Malibu, California. As of 2013, Holmes has worked continuously with INFNIT Nutrition to create a customized endurance blend that helps him to compete at the highest level throughout races lasting five plus hours.

“When paddling, the less you carry on you, the more you are at an advantage. My personal board has bottle holders, with straws, so being able to rely on only liquids helps to keep the weight of the board down as well as leaves my hands free to paddle. INFINIT and I have been working together to create a custom endurance blend that I am able to carry in one 28-ounce bottle. That, paired with a smaller bottle of Napalm has provided me with plenty of energy and hydration while removing all need for any other bars and gels that would just slow me down in a high intensity race. ”

Lockwood grew up in Florida where he learned to swim and surf at a very young age. For the majority of his childhood and into college he was involved in team sports. He excelled in football, and was even recruited by The Air Force academy to play at the collegiate level. Following a serious biking accident Holmes was forced to sit out for an entire season and eventually transferred to Furman University to finish out his football career.

After college, Lockwood moved to Malibu to pursue a career as a financial advisor. He would eventually become the CEO of the Integrity Financial Corporation. A few members of Lockwood’s church community were competing at The Catalina Classic paddleboard race in 2012 and Lockwood decided to look into the sport. Right away, Lockwood fell in love with the sport itself and the community around it. The sport allowed Lockwood to be out in the ocean as well as test his endurance.

The feeling of the open ocean has given Lockwood a better appreciation for the world around him saying, “You don’t really realize how small you are until you feel the power of some of the waves out on your board”. The group of people that helped build this somewhat underground sport were people that Lockwood felt an immediate connection with due to their appreciation for other people and the world around them. The entirety of the community was very supportive of each other and created a social atmosphere around the sport that made paddleboarding so unlike any other sport Lockwood had been a part of. The strong sense of community and support for one another has helped Lockwood to create balance in his life out of the water. Being a father of two, a CEO of a financial company, and a professional athlete would be too much for most people, but Lockwood believes that making the most of every day you are given is what life is really about.

Coming into 2014, Lockwood was a fairly new paddleboarder. He had very little race experience at the professional level but had the drive to make it far in the sport. As the 2014 Catalina Classic approached, Lockwood continued to work with INFINIT to create the perfect blend of carbs and electrolytes to keep him energized through the race. Lockwood would shock the field of competitors and fans of the sport as he took first place in the stock division. Not only would he take first place, he would also shatter the previous record for the division, beating it by over ten minutes.

This year Lockwood plans to move to the unlimited division of racing, as well as take a top five spot in all six of his races. The change from stock to unlimited means longer heavier boards and more exertion to get them moving. The top speeds are much higher and in turn races shorter, which led to Lockwood looking to INFINIT for adjustments to his formulas for high intensity conditions.

“Joining the team at INFINIT Nutrition and using their products has made a world of difference in my racing. Over years of experience with the one of a kind isotonic products that they provide, I have continued to improve my personal blend as I have improved my ability and performance. While other racers fumble with pre-weighed bags of powder to mix during the race, I save serious time by only needing one 28-ounce bottle of my endurance blend and a small bottle of napalm to power through the entire race.”
